Naturopathy Medicine Clinical Applications
Low Level Laser Therapy can be used to stimulate acupuncture points in conjunction with, or as a replacement to, traditional needle therapy. This can be a beneficial alternative for those who are squeamish with needles or have any concerns regarding invasive treatments.
Examples of Clinical Applications:
Li 4 – balance of yin and yang in upper body (good treatment point for any painful conditions of the upper body)
Li 3 – balance of yin and yang in lower body
Parasympathetic calming points (Lu 9, H 7, P 6) - for supression of anxiety
P6 - suppression of nausea and gagging
Other conditions routinely treated with laser acupuncture include:
· Musculoskeletal Pain
· TMJ Pain
· Frozen Shoulder
· Sciatic Pain
· Plantar Fasciitis
· Rheumatoid Arthritis
· Restless Leg Syndrome
Smoking Cessation and Weight Loss
Many clinics are currently using laser therapy, in conjunction with diet and behaviour modification, to help people overcome smoking addictions and help achieve weight loss. Laser irradiation of different auricular acupuncture points in the ear stimulates β-endorphins, the body’s natural morphine, which will help reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Though there isn't an overwhelming amount of research regarding LLLT and smoking cessation, there does seem to be some positive clinical evidence that supports the clinical application.
It’s important to recognize that although laser therapy may help with the cravings many experience when quitting smoking and losing weight, there are many other variables that need to addressed (diet, triggers, stress). Laser therapy is not a magic bullet; you have to want to stop and be willing to do the work.
Another important note is smoking cessation and weight loss laser programs often require many treatments and are generally not covered by an insurance plan. Following through with your treatment protocol, diet and behaviour modification requirements is very important for long-term success.
